(Finance) – One hundred new regional trains in 2025, for an economic investment of 850 million euros and over 430 million estimated travellers. In numbers, 2025 for the Trenitalia Regional opens in the name of growth in line with the provisions of the 2025-2029 strategic plan of the FS Italiane Group. Thanks to the Service Contracts with the Regions and Autonomous Provinces, clients of the service, in 2024 the 540 new generation trains which, added to the 335 already purchased previously, leads to 875 the number of new trains in circulation. Number destined to grow since, with further deliveries expected until 2027, Regionale will be able to count on 1,061 new convoysequal to 80% of the entire renewed fleet, for a total investment of seven billion euros.

What’s new for 2025

Among the main innovations in force since January, the automatic compensation for those who purchased the Regional Digital Ticket: in the event of a train delay, passengers will automatically receive – without having to make any type of request – delay compensation within 30 days.

It also takes up the new edition of X-GOthe loyalty program which, after the success of 2024 which closed with over one million members, this year will allow you to accumulate points more easily as two will be assigned for every euro spent on travel.

Finally, l“Regional Trips” initiative created in collaboration with Lonely Planet and dedicated to Italian panoramas to be discovered with the Regional Line connections. This is a guide that explores five itineraries (Tuscany Line, Trasimeno Line, Trabocchi Line, Salento Line and Taormina Line) which offer food and wine and nature experiences in typical Lonely Planet style, to be reached comfortably by train also thanks to the Promo Italia in Tour which, in its 3 and 5 day variants, allows unlimited travel on Trenitalia trains.

The commitment for the Jubilee 2025

On the occasion of the 2025 Jubilee, to facilitate the movement of pilgrims who will reach Rome, the sale of Metrebus tickets on the Trenitalia APPto travel on public transport in the capital and its metropolitan area. Furthermore, new trips have been added to the Leonardo Express with departures from Rome Termini until 11.35pm and from Fiumicino Airport until 00.23am. To encourage the use of the Regional train also on the occasion of spiritual journeys and pilgrimages, Trenitalia has created – in collaboration with Roman Opera Pilgrimages – a travel book on the heritage of cathedrals, churches and sanctuaries that can be easily reached by train. The editorial initiative focuses in particular on twenty destinations among the main cult destinations, all to be explored.

The numbers and challenges of 2024

In 2024 there were 415 million Regional passengers, 8 million more than the previous year. Approximately 45% of the total passengers chose the Regional for leisure and tourism reasons. Among the most important goals of the past year is the birth of the new Regional brand, characterized by the renewal of the fleet in the name of sustainability. The intermodal connections of the Regional Link service – train+bus and/or train+ship – have increased, reaching around 200 throughout Italy, for an even more widespread service capable of reaching even places where the train does not arrive. Furthermore, 2024 saw a greater use of the Digital Ticket, which today represents 43% of single-journey tickets sold and which allows you to receive information on the trip in real time. Finally, the activation of Tap&Tap – the new rapid and digital payment system – which, after Veneto, was also introduced along the routes connecting with the airports (Fiumicino, Turin, Cagliari and Palermo) and on the Florence-Florence lines.
