Region Östergötland notifies 900 employees – “An economy in free fall”

The proposal has been negotiated with the trade unions in the region’s collaboration group, the region states in a press release.

According to regional director Mikael Borin, the region now has a budget deficit of SEK 1.7 billion.

– We have an economy in free fall, he says at a press conference.

Several staff categories have increased in recent years, but not the proportion of nurses and they are therefore exempt from the notification.

“Inevitable decision”

– It is a regrettable but unfortunately unavoidable decision, says the regional board’s chairman Marie Morell (M). Region Östergötland is in an extremely challenging economic situation and the measures previously decided and ongoing have not had sufficient effect. On the contrary, the deficit in health and medical care continues to increase and further efforts are required for us to be able to reverse the trend

In 2016, Region Östergötland was one of the regions with the lowest costs. In 2022, the situation was just the opposite and the region now belongs to those with the highest costs.

It will take up to four months before it is clear which employees are affected. According to the regional director, it depends on the labor law steps to be taken and the negotiations with the unions that are now to be carried out.
