refugees in Rafah prepare to evacuate without knowing where to

Israel continues to bomb the Gaza Strip and in particular the southern city of Rafah. According to the UN, 100,000 Palestinians have fled the city. Even though the Israeli army assures that it is only a limited operation in eastern Rafah, Gazans are terrified.

Like many Gaza residents, Asma took refuge in Rafah after being forced to flee her home further north. She now lives with her sister.

With the launch of Israeli military operations in eastern Rafah in recent days, the nightmare has started again. Difficult to fall asleep, she testifies: “ We didn’t sleep, it was too difficult. There were many, many bombings and attacks, in the center of Rafah, in the East, in the West, everywhere », she says in French, by telephone from Rafah.

Asma has not received the order to evacuate, but she is preparing to do so. Returning to her home, in Khan Younes, north of Rafah, is not easy: the town has been largely destroyed by the Israeli army.

The problem there is that there is no more water. Until now, the neighbors have not found a solution for the watershe explains. So, we don’t even want to wait. It’s not at the last minute, but we’ll see how things will be. So far, here in Rafah, they have not asked other neighborhoods to leave, only those in the east. »

Gazans are also afraid of being bombed, even in areas where the Israeli army asks them to evacuate: they do not feel safe anywhere.
