In connection with the Migration Agency’s directive decision, the chairman of the municipal board responded in two internal emails “Sigh!” and “Refuse to receive them!”.
When Ali Al Hariri and his family later arrived at the airport, no one from the municipality was there to receive them.
– It felt strange. We know that Sweden is a fair country and this should not be the case. We have experienced constant displacement for two years. It has been tough to change schools all the time, for example, says Ali Al Hariri.
During his time in Sweden, Ali Al Hariri has focused on learning Swedish and is currently working as a care assistant in a home for the elderly. In Lebanon he trained as a biomedical analyst and in the future he hopes to further his education and work in that field.
Condemned for discrimination
Now the district court judges the municipality of Staffanstorp for having discriminated against the family and a discrimination compensation of SEK 7,000 must be paid to each family member.
– I am glad that the truth has come out and that it turned out that Staffanstorp municipality has made a mistake. They have lost a family that can contribute a lot to society, says Ali Al Hariri.
SVT Nyheter Skåne has applied for the chairman of the municipal board in Staffanstorp, Christian Sonesson (M), but he has not returned.
In the district court, the municipality denies discrimination and justifies its action by saying that it is not obliged by law to meet quota refugees at the airport. The municipality also argues that it made a political decision to focus on refugees from Ukraine during the current period. Going forward, the district court’s decision may be appealed.
