A fencer Reetta Hurskeen the hall season started dramatically on Tuesday in Torun, Poland. Hurskeen, 28, was supposed to start his season earlier, but illnesses postponed the competition.

On Tuesday, Hurske got off to a great start in the preliminaries of the 60-meter hurdles in Poland and came in first at the first fence. When crossing the second fence, his hind leg hit the fence. Hurske lost his balance and fell violently face first towards the third fence.

On Wednesday afternoon, the Finnish Sports Federation announced that Hurske avoided muscle and bone injuries, but suffered contusions and surface scratches. In addition, he received a wound below his knee, which was stitched up at a local hospital.

– According to the doctor, the leg received seven stitches. The chin is the only place that feels sore now. I hit it at the third fence, Hurske stated after returning to Finland.

– There was a really good feeling in Verka and everything went as I planned. When the leg got caught in the fence, there was no time for miracles until I was at the next fence.

– The medical staff was there quickly. They stated that the wound on the leg needs to be stitched up, but they made sure I didn’t hit my head enough to get a concussion. I myself was always aware of what was happening.

Although the race ended at the second fence, the start of the run told Hurskee that his condition is good after his illness in January.

– It gave me a good signal about what the condition is.

Reign period schedule?

A year ago, Reetta Hurske was unstoppable during the government period. He improved the Finnish record in the 60-meter hurdles numerous times. Now the SE time is 7.79. With a time of 7.79, Hurske also won EC gold in the EC halls in Istanbul.

On the outdoor tracks, Hurske ran 12.70 in the 100-meter hurdles last June.

This winter, the main goal of the hall season would be the World Championships in Glasgow, which will take place from 1st to 3rd. March. The World Championship limit is 8.02. Hurskee has already broken the limit, because the result limit must be done between January 1, 2023 and February 18, 2024.

Hurske estimates that the leg wound came from hitting the leg of the fence.

– It was such an impact-like, non-ragged wound. According to the doctor, the muscles and membranes were fine.

– Now I’m going to show the wound in Finland. We’ll see how it goes. According to the doctor in Torun, there are no obstacles to continue sports.

Hurskee’s original plans were to race at the weekend in France; on Saturday in Lievin and on Sunday in Paris.

Hurske was supposed to travel to France on Thursday, but the departure date has been moved to Friday.

– We’ll have to see how things go from here. I think it would be important to be able to compete soon, so that there are no worries. If I can’t compete for the rest of the week, I’ll run in the SM halls the following weekend.

The SM halls will be contested in Tampere on February 17–18. Sunday, February 18, is the last possible day to break the result limit for the WC halls.

In Torun, the Netherlands won the women’s 60-meter hurdles Nadine Visser in time 7.80. Three women have run harder this season, of which the USA holds the top time in the world Tia Jones with a time of 7.72.

Eveliina Määttänen on the other hand, ran the 800 meter indoor SE in Torun in 2:01.57. The former Finnish record was Sara Lappalainen 2.02.36 from 2022.

Määttänen improved his own record by almost three seconds. On outdoor tracks, Määttänen’s record is 1:59.81, which he ran last summer in the semifinals of the World Championships in Budapest.

Määttänen finished fifth in a tough competition. Ethiopian Habitam Alemu ran first with the best time of the season 1:57.86.
