World Day of Prayer is a global ecumenical movement that brings Christians of many traditions together annually for a common day of prayer, organizers at the Women’s Inter-Church Council of Canada say.

“Canada was one of the inaugural countries involved with this, over 100 years ago,” Ginn said.

“Together we pursue justice, peace, and reconciliation, by standing together in prayer and action,” organizers said in a release.

World Day of Prayer is traditionally observed on the first Friday of March, “to encourage Christian women to engage in personal prayer and lead communal prayer within their mission auxiliaries and associations,” Ginn said.

The first interdenominational day of prayer was held in Canada in 1920.

Each year’s service, aimed at bridging social, geographic and political barriers, is created by a participating country. This year’s comes from the World Day of Prayer Committee of Palestine with the theme “I beg you… bear one another in love.”

“It’s about an hour-long service,” Ginn said. “It’s the same service everywhere, for 146 countries.”

As many as 120 people are expected for this year’s Sarnia service in the sanctuary at Redeemer Lutheran, followed by fellowship and refreshments in the church hall, Ginn said.

It’s the first time Redeemer Lutheran will host, Ginn said.

The church is fully accessible, with plenty of parking available on site.
