Mexican soldiers and the Marine Corps have made a record-breaking seizure of fentanyl tablets in two raids, AP writes. Never in the history of the country has so much been seized at the same time, according to the authorities in the country.
Chasing gunmen
Soldiers reportedly saw two gunmen in the city of Sinaloa, home to a drug cartel of the same name. The men were chased into two houses where fentanyl was then found.
In one, 300 kilos were found, in the other, 800 kilos were found packed in a pickup truck. Several weapons were also found, AP writes.
Seizures of fentanyl in 2024 have been much lower than the year before. In the first six months of this year, only 130 kilos have been seized. Last year it was 2.3 tonnes.
Experts link it to Trump’s threats
Donald Trump has recently threatened both of the USA’s neighboring countries, Mexico and Canada, to impose tariffs of 25 percent on the countries’ goods. The requirement for not implementing it is that the countries work harder to reduce immigration and the flow of drugs from the countries into the United States.
Experts speak up AP that it cannot be a coincidence that such a large seizure is being made now.
– It is clear that the Mexican government has processed the timing of the fentanyl seizure, security analyst David Saucedo told the news agency.
He sees it as pressure from Donald Trump that Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum’s administration appears willing to increase the arrests of drug traffickers and drug seizures that Trump is calling for.
