Record number of weekly new local COVID 19 cases

The Brant County Health Unit on Tuesday said a record 369 new COVID-19 cases were reported for the week ended Dec. 26.

The previous record was 269 new cases for the week ended April 18.

And 98 new cases were reported on Monday, the health unit said.

Active cases have risen to 442 from 227 last Friday, when the health unit last reported numbers.

The Brant Community Healthcare System is reporting that there are seven COVID patients in hospital receiving care, with five in critical care. The BCHU reports there are eight patients in care, with the difference due to the timing of reporting.

Local new COVID cases have been steadily rising, with 158 in the week ended Dec. 19 and 110 for the week ended Dec. 12.

Since the pandemic began in March last year, 5,072 people have tested positive for COVID-19 in Brantford and Brant County, with 4,598 of those resulting in recovered cases.

There have been 32 local deaths attributed to COVID-19.

The BCHU is reporting COVID-19 cases by vaccination status each Monday. Of all cases since June 14, 55.07 per cent (885) have been among unvaccinated people, 6.85 per cent of cases (110) have been people with one vaccine dose and 38.08 per cent of cases (612) have been people who are fully vaccinated .

The health unit is reporting 2,198 variants of concern. Of those, 792 have the Alpha lineage, 526 have the Delta lineage, 89 have the Gamma lineage, five have the Omicron lineage and 786 have some mutation detected.

There have been 270,849 total doses of the vaccine administered at vaccination clinics in Brantford-Brant. That number includes 120,202 first doses, 118,700 second doses and 31,947 third doses.

As of Dec. 12, 81.27 per cent of residents aged five and older have received one dose of the vaccine while 75.96 per cent have received two or more doses.

  • 195 Henry St., Tuesday-Thursday, 9:30 am to 3:30 pm and Friday, 9:30 to 11:30 am
  • Paris Fairgrounds, Wednesday and Thursday, 9:30 am to 3:30 pm and Friday, 9:30 to 11:30 am

Clinics for third doses are currently at capacity until Jan. 15. More appointments will be opened this week for dates beginning on Jan. 17.

Ohsweken Public Health reported 26 active cases on Six Nations of the Grand River as of Thursday with 128 people in self-isolation.

There is one person from Six Nations currently hospitalized with the virus.

Since the start of the pandemic, there have been 889 confirmed cases, of which 843 are resolved.

Exact numbers were not available but almost 53 per cent of the population has received a dose of the vaccination, with 49 per cent competing their vaccination series.

There have been 15 deaths related to the virus on Six Nations.

On Tuesday, Public Health Ontario reported 8,825 new COVID-19 cases over the past 24 hours although officials are stating that the case numbers are underestimated due to a backlog of tests waiting to be processed and the demand for tests outweighing the supply across the province.

The province was expected to announce new testing and contact tracing guidance on Tuesday due to the explosion of cases and high demand for testing.

Data on the vaccination status of those infected, number of tests processed and positivity rate won’t be available until Wednesday due to the Christmas holiday.
