Average emissions from new passenger cars decreased in 2023, and last year were the lowest measured by the Swedish Transport Agency.

Above all, the reduction is due to the fact that there have been more electric cars.

In 2023, the average newly registered passenger car emitted 61 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometer in mixed driving. This corresponds to a decrease of roughly 8 percent compared to the year 2022, the Swedish Transport Agency writes in a press release.

“Over the past four years, the emissions from the average new passenger car have almost halved. Decisive for that development is the large increase in electric cars. In 2020, 27,000 electric cars were registered in the country. The corresponding figure for 2023 is 113,000,” says Anna Berggrund, director at the Swedish Transport Agency, in the press release.

Emissions from newly registered vehicles have now decreased for three years in a row. The authority changed the measurement method in 2020, but states that the new method generally produces higher emission values.
