Record early heat wave in Spain

In several Spanish cities, record temperatures of up to 40 degrees are noted. According to the country’s state weather service, it is likely to be the highest temperatures ever recorded in April on the Iberian Peninsula since measurements began.

The unusually early heat wave has been caused by a dry and warm air mass that swept over the country from North Africa. Places such as Valladolid, Ávila and Segovia are some of the areas affected by the scorching heat.

– It’s only spring and already this hot. You don’t want to think about what it will be like this summer, says Patricia Solorzaga, a resident of Madrid.

Warm even in Portugal

On Thursday, it was 38.8 degrees in Cordoba in southern Spain, which is also the highest temperature recorded in Europe during the month of April, reports Le Parisien referring to the French weather service Météo France.

The previous European record for the month was 38.6 degrees, and was recorded in Elche, Spain in 2011.

Nor is Portugal spared, which had a record heat of 36.9 degrees in the city of Moura earlier this week.

The high temperatures are expected to drop slightly during the weekend.
