The launch of one awaits us in December new franchise on Netflix. It was created by Zack Snyder, who is best known for his DC films (Man of Steel, Batman v Superman, Justice League). After he recently brought Army of the Dead to Netflix, his latest sci-fi epic follows: Rebel Moon.
Snyder originally had Rebel Moon pitched as a Star Wars film. After the project was rejected by Lucasfilm, he took his idea to Netflix and immediately made a two-parter. Rebel Moon Part 1: Child of Fire will launch on the streaming service this year. Rebel Moon Part 2: The Scar Maker will follow next year.
Zack Snyder is bringing his sci-fi epic Rebel Moon to Netflix in two different versions
Rebel Moon is intended to establish a new sci-fi universe at Netflix, which will be expanded into series, books, comics and games in the future. Coming from the first two films two versions: A PG-13 version, which probably corresponds to an FSK 12 in Germany, and an R-rated version, which is significantly harsher.
Snyder tells Entertainment Weekly:
I’m very proud of the PG-13 version, the version for the wider audience, because I would say it really works on a great, timeless, mythological level. What we did with the other version is entertaining and subversivebecause an R-rated sci-fi film of this magnitude shouldn’t exist.

The R-rated version of Rebel Moon is not only more brutal, but also significantly longer. According to Snyder, the extended version of the film is waiting additional world building and many other additions. It is therefore much more than an extended cut with a few minutes added to it.
Snyder has released many director’s cuts throughout his career. In most cases, however, these only saw the light of day after the cinema release and were only released in home cinema. Things were different with Rebel Moon. The longer versions were planned into production from the startwhich gave Snyder new possibilities when conceiving his sci-fi epic.
New sci-fi epic: When does Rebel Moon start on Netflix?
Rebel Moon Part 1: Child of Fire appears December 22, 2023 on Netflix. Rebel Moon Part 2: The Scarmaker follows on April 19, 2024. It is not yet clear when the respective R-rated versions of the films will be released. Snyder also revealed that he already has ideas for a third part of the sci-fi saga.
