At the end of the first playoff day of the European Football Championship, we saw a really dramatic struggle between Denmark and Germany. The match had to be stopped for 15 minutes due to a thunderstorm.
Even after a moment of interruption, the game turned out to be truly memorable. Germany won the match 2–0.
However, Denmark had to take a 1–0 lead first by Joachim Andersen on the finish line. The situation was ruled offside after video review. The TV pictures showed how of Thomas Delaney the big toe had been on the offside side in the goal situation.
Just moments later, Germany took a 1–0 lead when Germany were awarded a penalty after video review. Andersen was interpreted as having committed a hand error. In this situation, a new aid was used, i.e. a sensor installed on the ball.
Jamal Musiala completed the 2–0 goal for Germany. Dramatic video review moments stunned soccer legends across Europe.
– I never believed that VAR would work. Today, for the first time, I am worried about our beautiful game, German Dietmar Hamann wrote in X.
Rude text was also written by English icons Gary Neville and Alan Shearer.
– Really shocking that penalty kicks are given in this way, Neville regretted.
– The hand foul rule is bullshit, added Shearer.
In Denmark’s camp, Delaney described the offside penalty as cold water on the neck.
– I don’t know if our goal was a big offside. We suffer today, Delaney told Denmark’s TV2.
About Danish players Simon Kjaer took over the Norwegian public broadcaster NRK in the interview a more critical point of view and opened up about the penalty kick received by Germany.
– If you stop the video and look at the hand, in such a situation the hand will always be there. Playing football with the hand close to the body is almost impossible. This was where VAR’s biggest problems were visible, Kjäer opened up.
Head coach of Denmark Kasper Hjulmand on the other hand, arrived at the TV interview with a mobile phone in his hand and showed a picture of the offside.
– It’s about one centimeter. This is not possible. We know from statistics that we don’t know exactly when the ball leaves the foot for the cross. This was one decision, one centimeter decision.
– The other was the hand. We’ve been told that defenders shouldn’t run with their hands behind their backs. That is the normal position when running, jumping and kicking the ball from a meter away. This was the decisive decision of the game in my opinion. I don’t usually talk about this, but when VAR is used like this, it’s just ridiculous, Hjulmand uploaded according to NRK.
