Really good thriller with one of the most expensive screenplays

In 2002, David Fincher looked back on some acclaimed films. He had brought today’s cult films Fight Club and Seven into the cinemas, as well as an Alien film and the equally unforgettable thriller The Game. The direct successor to Fight Club should be Panic Room with Jodie Foster and the young Kristen Stewart be in the lead roles. Expectations for Panic Room were high. Not just because of Fincher’s rising star, but because of the coveted scripton which the film is based.

Today you can Panic Room at 10:35 p.m. on ProSieben see, the repetition follows the following night at 2.55 a.m.

Synopsis: That’s what Panic Room is about

Panic Room – Trailer (German)

Newly divorced Meg Altman (Jodie Foster) moves into a stately home in the heart of Manhattan with her 11-year-old daughter Sarah (Kristen Stewart). The big house has a special feature: a so-called panic room, equipped with thick steel wallsa surveillance system and its own ventilation, which provides the residents with protection in the event of an emergency.

Already on the first night mother and daughter have to take refuge in the secret room than at once three brutal burglars (Forest Whitaker, Dwight Yoakam and Jared Leto) are on the mat. But the burglars are targeting this Panic Room of all things and so they do everything they can to lure Meg and Sarah out of their hiding place.

The Panic Room script was worth $4 million

In 2013, a list of the most expensive screenplays of all time was published, which was quoted by Indie Wire. Panic Room shares second place with, among others, Deadly Christmas. Both scripts should cost $4 million. The price that the Columbia Pictures studio paid for Panic Room is hardly surprising. The work is by David Koepp, who also wrote the templates for Jurassic Park, Mission: Impossible and Spider-Man.

In addition, the script promised a sharp story with a dense scenario, based on a Observation of the present by Koepp was based with which a large audience could identify. According to legend, Koepp noticed that more and more rich city dwellers were having panic rooms built in their homes for fear of crime.

What other films are on the list of the most expensive screenplays

Panic Room finds itself in more than flattering company. The list also includes scripts for hits such as Basic Instinct, Déjà Vu – Race Against Time (the most expensive screenplay at 5 million), but also Eurotrip and Knights of Passion.

However, the List not complete. The scripts for Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (William Goldman), Chinatown (Robert Towne), Schindler’s List (Steven Zaillian), Social Network (Aaron Sorkin) and Pirates of the Caribbean (Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio) received horrendous credit, according to Indie Wire sums paid. However, the amounts have so far remained under wraps.

Nowadays, such prices are no longer given for screenplays anyway. In the age of franchises, original stories are losing their value and authors are losing their influence. After all, Star Wars and Marvel films are set in finished worlds and are mostly cast with well-known characters. These brands are worth billions, but not the scripts that screw the stories together.
