The thing from another world has already come a long way in film history. In 1951, the sci-fi horror hit the big screen for the first time and made for scary black-and-white images Fear and Loathing. 31 years later, director John Carpenter presented his iconic take on the story.

The 1982 remake The Thing from Another World still impresses with its icy atmosphere and the handmade effects, which make the pure horror visible before our eyes. The new edition has experienced significantly less love: The Thing from 2011 tells the history of the sci-fi horror.

  • Today on TV: The Thing airs tonight at 11:10 p.m. on ZDFneo.
  • Legendary sci-fi horror, The Thing brings back one of the most disgusting monsters in cinematic history

The plot of The Thing takes you back to the 1980s. The story centers on a research team that discovers a spaceship in Antarctica. There is one on board alien life formthat is frozen. Despite protests from paleontologist Kate (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), the creature is thawed.

What follows is a rude awakening: the research team is shocked to discover that there is a monstrous figure brought to life constantly transforming and turning the excursion into the eternal ice into a bloody trip to hell. Once the beast is unleashed, a relentless struggle for survival begins.

The Things blindly trusts a soulless CGI creature, Mary Elizabeth Winstead is all the cooler for it

In direct comparison to Carpenter’s film, the most recent approach to the uncanny thing commits an annoying mistake: The 2011 version was created with CGI effects and is a lot less menacing than the pulsating, dripping monster that makes Carpenter’s body horror absolutely sickening.

Nevertheless, the film is worth a look, because director Matthijs van Heijningen Jr. is quite capable of creating some great moments of tension in the fascinating setting. Aside from that, leading lady Mary Elizabeth Winstead cements her status as one of the best action heroines in genre cinema in recent years.
