After Martin Campbell successfully established a new James Bond on the big screen in the mid-1990s, towards the end of the decade he dedicated himself to another iconic fictional character who had not been seen in the cinema for a long time at the time: Zoro. The hero was played by Antonio Banderas.
The Mask of Zorro from 1998 is an extreme one entertaining adventure film, which has unfortunately now been somewhat forgotten. Today’s TV broadcast of the action blockbuster, which was later continued with The Legend of Zorro, is all the more recommended to you. However, there was never a third part.

The story is set during the Mexican War of Independence. The people suffer under the arbitrariness of the corrupt governor Don Rafael Montero (Stuart Wilson). Only the masked Zorro stands in his way. The Californian man of honor Don Diego De La Vega (Anthony Hopkins) hides under the mask.

When Montero finds out Zorro’s true identity, he kills his wife, kidnaps his daughter and puts him in prison. 20 years later, Don Diego plans his escape to take revenge. Fate brings him with it young bandits Alejandro Murrieta (Antonio Banderas), whom he chooses as his successor.
With a budget of 95 million US dollars, The Mask of Zorro over $250 million play in the cinema. Seven years later, Campbell brought the sequel The Legend of Zorro to the cinema. It wasn’t so well received and performed around $100 million less, so part 3 was never filmed.
