Realistic medieval MMORPG had to close in 2021, returns “for free” on Steam, is directly mostly negative

Due to a legal dispute, Life is Feudal: MMO disappeared from Steam more than three years ago. Now the medieval MMORPG has celebrated its comeback, and it is hailing negative reviews and accusations of rip-offs. We’ll break down the latest events for you.

What happened? It was already clear last year that Life is Feudal: MMO should return under new management. A few days ago the medieval MMORPG made a comeback on Steam, in the “free” early access version.

There is an unpleasant reason why we put “free” in quotation marks. The EA version of Life is Feudal: MMO is only free2play at first glance, i.e. accessible for free. In reality, LTG wants to collect a monthly fee from you. The developers explain this in their Early Access FAQ as follows:

During the Early Access phase, the game will be available via a subscription model: this allows us to continually add new features and content based on your valuable feedback! Even though we will adjust the prices for the full version, we assure you that they will not be higher than the current price. We will inform you in good time about any changes.

How does the community react to the subscription model? Life is feudal: MMO has just 27 percent positive reviews after its comeback. That makes the bottom line a “Mostly Negative”. Many buyers of the original version are downright angry that they are now suddenly having to pay a monthly subscription even though they had already purchased the game.

Engelskrieger writes, for example: “I bought the game for 120 euros. I’m definitely not going to pay monthly so I can play it again. Rip-off to the power of three.”

The technical condition of the game is also heavily criticized in terms of bugs, server stability and performance. In addition, despite a long break, nothing is said to have changed for the better since the shutdown more than three years ago.

What kind of game is Life is Feudal: MMO? The hardcore MMORPG throws you into a harsh, medieval world where realism is important and you fight for survival. A sandbox awaits you in which you can master crafts, fight guild wars and build entire settlements.

In addition to Life is Feudal: MMO, there are two offshoots: Life is Feudal: Forest Village (via Steam), a city-building simulation, and Life is Feudal: Your Own (via Steam). With the latter version, you can host servers yourself to experience the hardcore sandbox gaming experience with friends or strangers. Both games cost around 20 euros each and have overall balanced reviews.

Why did Life is Feudal: MMO have to be shut down? The reason given by those responsible at the then developer Bitbox was a legal dispute with the publisher who was supposed to distribute Life is Feudal: MMO. Since they couldn’t come to an agreement, the studio no longer received any money, which ultimately led to the MMO version being shut down.
