After a long spring, the Champions League reached the final stage and there pitted the most champions Real Madrid against the rising team Borussia Dortmund at Wembley.
Supporters stormed the pitch
When the match started, it didn’t take long before the referee blew the match off after a number of supporters got into the infield. After a couple of minutes of interruption, however, the match started again.
When the game was then started, it was Dortmund who made the first push. After a fine attack, Julian Brandt came forward in the offensive penalty area, but the German had to see his finish go well beyond Courtois’ left post.
Post hit for Dortmund
Dortmund continued to create chances and barely three minutes after Adeyemi’s chance, Niclas Füllkrug got a toe on the ball after a tackle. The striker outwitted Courtois but was denied by the post and 0-0 still stood.
– He makes good progress in that run and he is a very good finisher, I have praised him for that. So when, the pole, stated TV4 Play expert Vicki Blommé.
Real Madrid, who were huge early favourites, made several attempts to establish some form of offensive danger, but Dortmund found countermeasures time after time.
For the rest of the first half, Edin Terzic’s men pressed for a lead, but Thibaut Courtois and his wall of defense managed to keep their own goal at bay in the opening 45 minutes.
Goalless at half time
In other words, it was a first half in which Borussia Dortmund stood up more than well against Real Madrid, but at the beginning of the second Carlo Ancelotti’s gang got going.
After just over an hour of play, however, order was restored when Dortmund came forward and it was again Füllkrug who got the chance.
After a sweeping cross from the left, the striker got the chance. He got a hard header, but failed to outwit Courtois, who was well positioned and averted the danger.
Shortly after, Real Madrid created their best opportunity to date when Vinicius Júnior found Jude Bellingham with a cross. The Englishman broke free and looked to be first on the ball, but he didn’t get a hit with his head and an exasperated Kobel could breathe a sigh of relief.
Real Madrid decided late
But shortly after, the dividend would come and it was Real Madrid who got it. In the 74th minute, a corner was sent in from Toni Kroos. There, Dani Carvajal came up and scored the 1-0 goal with his forehead.
– Dani Carvajal finds a great surface there at the first post. It is nicely placed at the far post, difficult for Kobel in the goal to actually get hold of it, announced Vicko Blommé and continued:
After Carvajal’s header, the Spaniards pressed for further goals – and they were to come.
Jude Bellingham was left upright outside the offensive penalty area. The former Dortmund player then found Vinicius Júnior, who was then the safety himself as he coolly slotted home the 2-0 goal.
After Vinicius Júnior’s goal, Dortmund did everything they could to create nerves in the final minutes of the match. However, Real Madrid’s defensive wall continued to stand still and thus “Los Blancos” were able to hold off and secure the victory with exactly 2-0.
The secured Champions League title is Real Madrid’s 15th in the European Cup context.
