Hamas is “ready” for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and calls on Donald Trump to “put pressure” on Israel to end its military operations, a senior Hamas official said this Friday, November 15. Palestinian Islamist movement.
“Hamas is ready to reach a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip in case a ceasefire proposal is presented and on the condition that (Israel) respects it,” a member of his office said politician, Bassem Naïm, by calling “the American administration and Trump to put pressure on the Israeli government to stop the aggression” in Gaza. “Hamas has informed the mediators that it is in favor of any proposal submitted to it, which would result in a definitive ceasefire and military withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, allowing the return of the displaced, a serious agreement for an exchange of prisoners, the entry of humanitarian aid and reconstruction,” added Bassem Naïm.
A Trump effect?
Hamas’ proposal also comes nearly a week after Qatar announced the suspension of its role as mediator in the war, urging all parties to be “serious.” The recent election of Donald Trump to the White House could breathe new life into the conflict, with the Republican having promised to bring peace to the region.
During the unprecedented attack by commandos of the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas on October 7, 2023, 251 people were kidnapped on Israeli soil. A total of 97 hostages remain in Gaza, 34 of whom were declared dead by the army. Since the only truce which allowed the release of more than 100 hostages at the end of November 2023, negotiations have been deadlocked, to the point that Qatar announced the suspension of its mediation between Israel and Hamas.
The retaliatory offensive by Israel left 43,764 dead in the Palestinian territory, the majority of them civilians, according to data from the Hamas government’s Ministry of Health.
