With the Razer Edge, a new handheld will be launched in January 2023. But does the model have any chance against Steam Deck and the other competition?

Razer introduced a new device in October. The Razer Edge is a gaming handheld with a fast display unit and a few other features. But at the same time as the Razer Edge, a number of other manufacturers are vying for the attention of buyers:

    Razer Edge shares similarities with Steam Deck and Nintendo Switch

    What does the Razer Edge offer? The device relies on a Full HD Plus display with 6.8 inches (17.27 cm) and a refresh rate of 144 Hz. Inside is the Snapdragon G3x Gen 1. This is a new chip from the manufacturer of the same name that is used for Gaming should be optimized.

    Otherwise, the device builds on well-known strengths of Razer:

    • The device is offered both as a pure WLAN model and with an option with a mobile phone network (5G). The 5G model is initially only available from the American provider Verizon.

    What can I play with it? Anyone hoping to only be able to play AAA titles or the latest games from the PC on the device will have to be disappointed. Because the model relies on Android 12 and is therefore particularly suitable for streaming and co. So you can stream new games via Game Pass, for example.

    You can play Steam games, but only indirectly via Steam Link, where your computer calculates the game.

    A streaming service closed at the end of 2022. The big success against PlayStation and Xbox just didn’t happen:

    When will the device be available? The handheld is officially available from January 26, 2023 for a price of 399 US dollars. In Germany, the price with taxes is a little higher and should be around 450 euros.

    Does the device have a chance? Priced at $399, Razer’s model isn’t exactly cheap. Valve’s offer sounds more tempting. For currently 419 euros, you not only get the more powerful hardware, but you are also much more flexible in the selection of games.

    On the other hand, with a 144Hz display, the Razer Edge offers an advantage that the Steam Deck cannot. On top of that, the Steam Deck’s battery is only mediocre. In our test with 2 MMORPGs on the Steam Deck, the battery died after about 2 hours. Again, the Razer Edge could be better.

    Whether the device can really keep up with the Steam Deck depends entirely on the demands you have on the device:

  • If you’re looking for a better alternative to mobile or streaming GeForce Now or Game Pass, the Razer Edge definitely sounds promising.
  • If streaming is only partially an option for you or if you mainly want to play your Steam games, then the Razer Edge is not an option for you. For around 400 euros, the Steam Deck is probably the better option for many users at the moment.

    What is the competition like? In fact, Razer isn’t the only company that has come up with the idea of ​​offering a handheld for gamers. Logitech wants to launch the “G Cloud” on the market in 2023. Initially, the model is said to be only available in the US, but it could later be available in Europe as well.

    The G Cloud is also based on a device with a WLAN module and an option for 5G. Otherwise, Logitech installs a 7-inch LCD display with Full HD resolution and touch function and offers a slightly lower resolution than Razer. However, you also pay around 100 euros less for the “G Cloud”.
