The Junior World Championships in Athletics are underway in Peru.
Siiri Siirtola19, won her women’s 100m hurdles heat at the U20 World Championships in Lima, Peru. Heat won the heat with a time of 13.43.
Siirtola, who ran his record 13.28 at the beginning of August, was the sixth best in the heats. The best time (13.18) was clocked by Jamaica Kerrica Hill.
Siirtola’s run went on, even though a stomach bug has been bothersome.
– The start of the run was good, and there was no need to press all the way to the end. It’s a big win mentally when you get a run like this right at the start, when you had a fever the other night and your stomach is still upset.
– I would like to reach the final, Siirtola outlined his goal.
The semi-finals will be played on Thursday from 23:05 Finnish time.
Rasmus Vehmaa advanced to the semi-finals of the men’s 110 meter hurdles with a heat win, with a time of 13.60. This summer, Vehmaa, 19, has run a wild under-20 Finnish record of 13.13.
Vehmaa’s first set got started with a second attempt. Vehmaa’s start was not the best possible, but he soon got to the top, dominated the race and slacked off a bit at the end.
– It was such a morning opener. There was a bit of tweaking with the racks. The start was bad, but then I looked to catch up with the two ahead, Vehmaa repeated.
Vehmaa wondered about the surface of the track.
– I don’t know which rule it is, when the effort spots for the first and third fence are soft and different from the rest of the track, which is like asphalt.
Semi-finals on Thursday at 23:30 Finnish time.
Emmi Mäkäläinen advanced to the women’s shot put final with a result of 60.36, which brought 11th place in the qualification. Mäkäläinen’s record this summer is 62.40.
Ilona Verho was 15th in moukari qualifying with a score of 58.00. Verho’s record is 59.86.
The top two in the qualification were from China Jiale Zhang and Cyprus Valentina Savva with results of 65.73 and 65.61. 59.62 was required for the final.
The women’s shot put final will be contested on Sunday.
Men’s 200m preliminaries Juho Venäläinen clocked 21.23, which brought the second place in the set and a place in the semifinals. In all, he was ninth in the heats. Australia was the fastest Gout Gout with a time of 20.77.
The semi-finals for 200 meters are run on the night between Thursday and Friday Finnish time.
