Raphaël Varane: still uncertain for the World Cup? Deschamps sows doubt

Raphael Varane still uncertain for the World Cup Deschamps sows

Called up by Didier Deschamps for the 2022 World Cup, Raphaël Varane remains uncertain for the competition.

Injured for several weeks, Rahpaël Varane declared a few days ago that he was fit to play the first match of the World Cup against Australia on November 22, an essential criterion for Didier Deschamps. But in a press conference to justify the list, Didier Deschamps was a little evasive about the state of health of the Manchester United defender.

“Raphael is not going to play (this weekend) but he will be available for the first match (…) He is in a re-athleticization phase, with races. We know what he will do tomorrow, what he will do the day after tomorrow. Afterwards, there are deadlines. There are stages to go through and he has already gone through some of them.

Raphaël Varane was born on April 25, 1993 in Lille. From the age of 9, Raphaël Varane was spotted by Racing Club de Lens, which he joined in 2002. Earlier than the other recruits, in 2010 he signed a three-year professional contract with the club. He then participates in the French Amateur Championship, and is a member of the French under-18 team.

It was only 17 years old that Raphaël Varane turned professional. He is tenured in Ligue 1, and selected for the France U23 team. While Lens was relegated to Ligue 2, he joined Real Madrid on the advice of Zinedine Zidane for the sum of 10 million euros. He signs with the Spanish club for six years.

He plays his first match in September, and plays his role perfectly with impressive calm and maturity. Three days later, again tenured, he scored a goal. In the following days, Varane took part in his first Champions League match. In 2011, he will take part in nine matches in the Spanish league, four in the Champions League and two in the Spanish Cup.

In 2012, when he obtained the number 2 jersey at Real, he was called up by the brand new coach of the France team Didier Deschamps to take part in a friendly match against Uruguay. He remains on the sidelines but, after his excellent performances at the end of 2012 and beginning of 2013 at Real, he returns in March with the Blues and starts against Georgia. He thus becomes the youngest defender to start a match for the France team.

From then on, he became an indisputable holder both within Real Madrid (with whom he won the Champions League, the UEFA Super Cup and the King’s Cup in 2014), and within the France team. With the latter, he participated in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil by being systematically selected. He is also part of the team beaten against Portugal in the Euro final in 2016.

In 2017, Varane achieved the Champions League – La Liga double for the first time in his career. The following season, Real Madrid retains its European title, despite a complicated season at the national level. In July 2018, Raphaël Varane led the French team to a second world title in Russia. Crowned World Champion alongside his teammates Benjamin Pavard or Olivier Giroud, the tricolor defender continues his adventure in the tricolor jersey. In 2021, he is part of the list of players summoned by Didier Deschamps to compete in the Euro. This season, Real Madrid have failed to win any trophies, a first since 2015.

Evolving within one of the biggest clubs in Europe, Raphaël Varane has a well-stocked track record. Crowned Spanish Champion for the first time in 2012, the French defender once again lifted the trophy associated with victory in La Liga twice, in 2017 and then in 2020. Between 2012 and 2020, Raphaël Varane also won no less than 14 titles in Real Madrid jersey: 1 Copa del Rey (2014), 2 Spanish Super Cup (2017 and 2020), 3 UEFA Super Cup (2014, 2016 and 2017), 4 Club World Cups (2014, 2016 , 2017 and 2018) and especially 4 Champions League (2014, 2016, 2017 and 2018). With this club record, Raphaël Varane is one of the best French players of his generation. And that’s without counting on the title of World Champion acquired in 2018 with the Blues after the World Cup final won by France against Croatia.

With a salary close to 9 million euros per year, Raphaël Varane is in the average salary paid by the Real Madrid club to the players in its workforce. By way of comparison, Karim Benzema, who plays in 2021 in the same jersey, earns 10 million euros per year as a striker, while Dani Carvajal caps at 5 million euros per year. As with all professional footballers, Raphaël Varane’s salary does not take into account any victory and title bonuses. We must also add the income related to the various advertising contracts to have a more precise idea of how much Raphaël Varane earns each year.

Raphaël Varane married his partner Camille Tytgat in the spring of 2015. Together, the couple gave birth to their first child, a boy born on March 9, 2017 and named Ruben. Raphaël Varane’s family is growing in the fall of 2020 with the birth, on October 25, of a little girl named Anaïs. It should be noted that in the north of France, the name of the Varane family is not always associated with the first name Raphaël. The tricolor defender has a half-brother born in 2001 who also follows a football career. In 2018, France discovers another member of Raphaël Varane’s family on the occasion of the Miss France 2019 election. Elected as the representative of Nord-Pas-de-Calais, Annabelle Varane is none other than the sister of the number 4 of the French football team.
