Rapeseed and turnip lit up this year’s harvest

Leksand extended the winning streak beat AIK

This year’s total grain harvest was 5.8 million tonnes, according to a press release from the Swedish Board of Agriculture. That is 17 percent higher than last year.

The stresses of winter reduced the yield levels of the autumn-sown crops, but instead the spring-sown ones fared all the better. The yield for spring-sown cereal crops increased by 36-46 percent compared to last year’s levels, which in and of themselves were low.

In Skåne County, the yield per hectare of spring barley was a record high. In the other direction went Kalmar County, which was hit by a severe drought again this year.

The hectare harvest of autumn rapeseed was 4 percent higher than in 2021. For the country as a whole, the total harvest of rapeseed and turnip has been calculated at 426,600 tonnes, which is the largest ever reported.

The hectare harvest of peas was 43 percent higher than last year’s low result and 21 percent higher than the five-year average.

Field beans also did well. The total harvest has been calculated at 79,000 tonnes, 62 percent higher than last year and 27 percent higher than the five-year average.

On the other hand, the winter weather took its toll in the form of ice burn and frost damage among autumn-sown crops in parts of the country – including in Uppsala, Värmland, Västmanland and Dalarna counties.
