Former movie mogul Harvey Weinstein was convicted Monday in a Los Angeles court of additional rape charges and faces up to 18 years in prison, in addition to the 23 he is already serving.
According to the court’s jury, Weinstein is guilty of rape and several sexual assaults against one of the women who was the plaintiff in the trial.
The 70-year-old Weinstein announced on Tuesday that he will appeal the court’s decision.
“For Harvey, of course, the verdict is disappointing. He knows what happened and what didn’t happen,” Weinstein’s spokesperson Juda Engelmayer said in a statement to the AFP news agency.
During the trial, Harvey Weinstein denied the allegations and claimed that the women lied. In some cases, he admits that sexual contacts have taken place, but with the women’s consent.
Since 2020, Weinstein is serving a sentence from another trial in New York. He was then sentenced to 23 years in prison for rape and sexual assault against two women.
It was the allegations against Harvey Weinstein that made the metoo movement take off in 2017.
