The municipality’s proposal: 40 percent rent increase

Some of those who are at risk of being hit by a serious rent hike are those who live in nursing homes in Motala municipality. They want to raise rents there by up to 40 percent, according to Home & rent.

On average, the municipality wants to raise the rents for 389 rooms and apartments that the seniors live in by 26.6 percent. An increase of 40 percent is proposed for one of the new residences.

A person who lives in a 36 square meter home risks an average increase of 26.6 percent. This would mean that the pensioner would have to pay an additional SEK 784, and in total the expenses for food and housing would amount to over SEK 10,000 a month.

That’s why they want to shock rents in nursing homes

In the spring of 2023, the municipal council in Motala municipality adopted a new rental model, whereupon a negotiation with the Tenants’ Association began, a negotiation that has not yet been completed.

The background to the high increase would be to, in the municipality’s opinion, correct a calculation error that was made when the original rents were determined.

– Each individual tenant can, of course, accept a new lease, but I probably don’t think they will. This means that there will be a utility value test in each individual case, says Erik Ferlinthe rental council in Linköping to Hem & hyra.

In that case, it could result in hundreds of cases ending up on the rent board’s table.

– It is as it is. Linköpingsnämnden has had a number of somewhat larger strandings, but I don’t think we have had any that are this big. But of course we have to deal with that if that happens.
