Rainfall record after storm Hilarys advance

Former Tropical Storm Hilary has broken rainfall records in San Diego, California.

A new storm, Franklin, hits the island of Hispaniola in the West Indies.

Storm Hilary, which swept across northeastern Mexico and California, continued over the US state of Nevada on Monday.

The tropical storm brought massive rains, and emergency authorities had to help many in flooded desert areas near the city of Palm Springs.

The US hurricane agency NHC downgraded Hilary to a pre-tropical storm on Monday afternoon, but added that it “could still be life-threatening and cause catastrophic flooding”.

Hilary caused rainfall records in several places where it advanced, including as far north as the states of Oregon and Idaho.

San Diego, California saw a previous rainfall record set in 1977 be broken on Sunday.

Tijuana, Mexico, just across the border from San Diego, was also hard hit by the rain.

While Hilary continued its path over the US mainland, Tropical Storm Franklin struck Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Authorities warned of both flooding and landslides due to Franklin’s advance.
