Rain chaos in New Zealand: 2,000 emergency calls and three dead

Leksand extended the winning streak beat AIK

Three people have died and one person is missing after torrential rains and floods hit New Zealand’s largest city, Auckland.

One person was found dead in a flooded culvert and one deceased was found in a flooded parking lot, authorities said. A third dead person was found where a landslide swept away a house in an Auckland suburb.

A summer’s rain

Friday was the wettest day on record in Auckland, according to weather services. The same amount of rain that normally falls in the whole summer fell in one day. On Friday evening, more than 15 centimeters of rain fell in three hours in some places.

The emergency services report that they made 700 calls during the downpour and received around 2,000 emergency calls.

– We have had all available personnel and volunteers out on the roads to take care of the most urgent incidents, says regional rescue leader Brad Mosby.
