A fishing boat containing 2 tons of 900 kilograms of cocaine was seized in Spain on Wednesday, April 13, in the waters south of the Canary Islands. Spanish security forces reported that 5 crew members on the boat were arrested.
HIDDEN IN FUEL TANKERS
Authorities announced that the 20-meter-long fishing boat called “AKT 1”, which was caught upon a tip-off, was stopped 300 miles away from the Canary Islands, and that 2,900 kilograms of cocaine was hidden in one of the fuel tanks. The market value of the cocaine seized was approximately 174 million euros.

The sea area where the fishing boat was caught is known to be a transit area on the route defined as the “African Road” in the illegal drug trade by the Spanish security forces’ anti-drug units. It is stated that especially Colombian drug dealers use fishermen in this region to deliver to Europe.
