More than 60 people are suspected of child pornography offenses after extensive police operations in three counties.

The police operations were carried out during the autumn by the police in region Mitt against suspicious persons in Västmanland, Gävleborg county and Uppsala county. A total of 72 people have been interrogated, of which 62 were detained.

The number of child pornography reports has increased significantly, according to the police in region Mitt. In order to catch up with all the cases, the police in the region had to make a big effort.

– We needed to make this type of effort to graze the notifications. On my investigative team, there aren’t that many investigators to make this kind of move. Everyone in region Mitt has been involved in some way, says Emma Vangstad, group leader at the investigation group for the investigation of Internet-related sexual abuse of children.

The 62 who were deprived of liberty have been questioned for the first time. Reactions from the suspects have been different.

– Some probably feel that it is quite nice to be able to talk about this unwanted sexuality. Some may be shocked and say nothing, says Emma Vangstad.

The detainees have been released, but suspicion remains. Seizures such as computers, telephones and hard drives must now be reviewed. After that, there will be another interrogation. The purpose is to prosecute suspected persons who have children of their own or who have children in their vicinity. And to identify and prevent any ongoing sexual abuse.

– The goal is to prosecute and prosecute. There will be an evaluation when we are done with the investigative phase. Then we will see how many reported cases we get, says Vangstad.
