Deforestation of the Atlantic forest in Brazil increased by 66 percent last year compared to the previous year, according to the organization SOS Mata Atlantica.
Satellite images show that 21,642 hectares of forest disappeared from the Atlantic forest between November 2020 and October 2021.
Like the Amazon, the lesser-known Atlantic forest plays an important role in the fight against climate change by absorbing and storing carbon dioxide.
