For his 2nd tournament, Rafael Nadal produced a superb performance by eliminating Alberto Costa, world n°7 and winner of RG 2002. He would be eliminated by the future finalist of the tournament, Guillermo Coria (6-7 2-6). He becomes the first 16-year-old player to enter the world top 100 since Michael Chang in 1988.
