In Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 index lost 1.8 percent in morning trade, while the broader Topix index fell 1 percent.
In Hong Kong, the fall was even sharper where the Hang Seng lost more than 2 percent before lunch.
The composite index in Shanghai and Shenzhen retreated 0.7 and 0.4 percent respectively in morning trade.
