Shares in energy companies and banks were among the losers. The major regional banks Truist Financial and Keycorp were among those that fell the hardest, down 5.9 and 3.7 percent respectively.

Companies within medical and health care went up. HCA Healthcare, which runs hospitals, reported a positive quarterly report that exceeded economists’ forecasts. The stock rose 3.9 percent.

The broad S&P 500 index, the Dow Jones industrial index and the Nasdaq composite index – all three closed at plus 0.1 percent. Calculated for the entire past week, the S&P 500 retreated 0.1 percent, while the Dow Jones lost 0.2 percent and the Nasdaq fell 0.4 percent.
