The TBS patient who escaped yesterday ran away in an unguarded moment, says a spokesperson for the Public Prosecution Service. Almost always when someone runs away, it is impulsive, says Schellekens of the Van der Hoeven Clinic. The reasons are endless. For example, it could be that someone wants to escape the system, wants to use narcotics outside or is psychotic, Schellekens explains. “It could also be that someone’s mother is dying and thinks: I have to be there, I want to see her, you name it.”
