Quentin Tarantino loves Steven Spielberg’s 100 million flop like no one else: “Watched it alone in the cinema twice”

Quentin Tarantino loves Steven Spielbergs 100 million flop like no

Cult director Quentin Tarantino never holds back when it comes to opinions on films. While he likes to destroy, for example, one of the most popular war films of recent years, he often has too much love left for some works.

As a podcast guest, Tarantino recently raved about West Side Story by Steven Spielberg. The musical remake flopped three years ago, but the Pulp Fiction director would have given it an Oscar.

Quentin Tarantino loves Steven Spielberg’s flopped West Side Story

According to World of Reel, Tarantino was a guest on American Psycho author Bret Easton Ellis’ podcast a few weeks ago. Here they both talked about Spielberg’s musical remake, which had a budget of $100 million worldwide according to Box Office Mojo could only gross 76 million and thus flopped badly.

However, Tarantino raved highly about West Side Story:

I loved West Side Story. The best film of 2021, should have won the Oscar and the guy who played Riff should have won the Oscar. It’s the only film I saw twice alone in the cinema. He was better than I ever imagined. He was right up there with Fury Road.

Spielberg always wanted one big cinema musical and has fulfilled this dream with the new edition of West Side Story. The film’s story takes place in 1950s New York, where two rival gangs fight for the Upper West Side. At the center of the story, María (Rachel Zegler), the sister of Sharks leader Bernardo (David Alvarez), falls in love with Tony (Ansel Elgort), who is a member of the troubled Jets.

When will Quentin Tarantino’s new film be released in cinemas?

The cult director’s next and final feature film is called The Movie Critic and will be released in… Los Angeles in the 70s play. The main character is probably a critic for a porn magazine and a vulgar, cynical character. The director described him as a mix of US radio host Howard Stern and Travis Bickle from Taxi Driver.

The Movie Critic does not currently have an official release date. We expect a theatrical release sometime in 2025.
