Quentin Tarantino destroys one of the most popular war films of recent years – by drawing attention to a detail that hardly anyone notices

Quentin Tarantino destroys one of the most popular war films

Rarely do war films make the horror of battle as tangible as Sam Mendes’ 1917 film. This is mainly due to the director’s unusual staging, which makes the film seem so as if it was filmed without a single cut been.

But the impression is deceptive, because 1917 has many hidden cuts that are barely visible. Cult director Quentin Tarantino accuses the film of this trick, among other things.

Tarantino criticizes war film 1917 for two reasons

On the podcast Club Random with Bill Maher (via IndieWire), the director spoke about how the hidden cuts in 1917 severely weaken the acclaimed war film:

I’m not saying they’re doing it badly… But if you’re going to do it, really fucking do it. Give yourself 15 minutes per damn take.

Even though Tarantino himself doesn’t think the film is bad, there was one thing he couldn’t ignore after a friend pointed it out to him. 1917 looks like a video game for the director.

Since he doesn’t play video games himself, he didn’t notice this aspect at first. But after his friend’s tip, he couldn’t hide it from any scene.

1917 won three Oscars

1917 was considered a big favorite at the 2020 Oscars. In the end, there were at least three trophies in the technical categories: for the best visual effects, the best sound and the best camera. At Amazon Prime you can currently only buy 1917 digitally. * The title costs 3.98 euros, which is as much as the usual rental fee.
