Geelen was 19 when she was probably infected with the virus at a petting zoo. After that, her health quickly went downhill. She suffered a cardiac arrest, was operated on several times and underwent years of therapy. “It was a very exciting time and a scary period,” says Geelen. “Of course you want to be heard, but when you are sick, you are mainly concerned with getting better.”
