Pyrotechnics behind half of the blasts

Criminals are increasingly using bombs of pyrotechnics during blasts.
Kalla Fact’s review shows that fireworks and heavy bangers have been used in half of the death in Sweden in the past year.
“About half of the blasts we have seen in Sweden in criminal context have consisted of various types of pyrotechnic products or objects,” says Malin Nygren, head of the National Bomb Data Center at the Police.

These include illegal bangers and so -called chrysanthemum bombs, which are part of powerful fireworks. But even though homemade bombs where constituents from pyrotechnics were used in manufacturing.
Cold Facts review shows that pyrotechnics bombs were used in several locations in the country.

In addition to Stockholm, deeds and seizures have taken place in Örebro, Växjö, Gothenburg and Malmö. In Skåne alone, 15 cases with fireworks bombs are investigated from the past year.

– We have several cases where precisely pyrotechnic products that have been used in different ways have caused major material injuries, but also damage to people, says Malin Nygren.

Police tracking an increase

One explanation is believed to be that pyrotechnics is easy to use and easier to get over than, for example, construction dynamite, where the regulations are tightened. In an internal PM that Kalla Fakta took part in the police, the police that fireworks bombs may increase.

According to the police, they work in several ways to try to counteract the problem. This is done, among other things, through strengthened cooperation between authorities and with other countries within the EU.

– But more needs to be done. It is about the supervision and control of traders and the introduction of this type of goods, but also the public has a responsibility to know the rules and understand the seriousness of the situation, says Malin Nygren.
