Ukraine’s successful offensive in Russia’s Kursk region continues to increase pressure on Russia’s president, Vladimir Putin. In an attempt to strengthen his defenses, he now calls in the paramilitary group “Björnbrigaden”, a tactic we have seen before with the Wagner group. Officially, these groups are presented as private companies, but in reality experts believe that they are controlled by the state, and operate in a kind of gray area, as a way for Vladimir Putin to avoid responsibility. Among other things, the Wagner Group has been accused of serious war crimes during its time in Ukraine, including torture, executions and abuses against the civilian population.
But what do we really know about the “Björnbrigaden”?
What role will they play in the war against Ukraine?
And can we expect Putin to continue to rely on more private military companies in the future?
