President of Russia Vladimir Putin says he wants to change Russia’s nuclear weapons line so that it could use nuclear weapons in response to a “massive airstrike” on Russian soil.
Putin spoke about the issue on Wednesday in a televised meeting with the Russian Security Council on nuclear deterrence.
At the meeting, Putin proposed that Russia could use nuclear weapons in the future if it were to be attacked with missiles. In addition, according to Putin, Russia could react to another kind of attack with nuclear weapons, which would have been carried out with the support of a nuclear state.
In his speech, Putin referred to current threats, apparently referring to Russia’s February 2022 war of aggression in Ukraine and its consequences.
According to the Russian president, the decision to change Russia’s nuclear weapons line is the Kremlin’s response to the debate on whether the United States and Britain should give Ukraine permission to attack Russia with Western missiles.
According to Putin, Russia must take into account the current changed military and political situation and new military threats to Russia and its allies.
Chief of Staff of the President of Ukraine Andri Jermak commented on Putin’s statement on Wednesday evening, saying that Russia has no other means of intimidation left than blackmail with nuclear weapons.
