Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree paving the way for foreigners who fought for Russia in the war in Ukraine to obtain Russian citizenship. According to the decree published on the Kremlin Information Portal, foreign nationals who signed a contract to serve in the Russian army against Ukraine will be able to obtain Russian citizenship. Foreign nationals who previously participated in the Ukrainian war for Russia but left their duties for different reasons will also be able to apply for Russian citizenship. However, those who fought for Russia were required to serve in the army for at least 1 year.
According to the decree, families of foreign nationals who fought on behalf of Russia will also be able to apply for Russian citizenship. Fingerprints and various health reports will be requested from foreign nationals and their families who will apply for Russian citizenship. Those who meet the valid conditions will be able to obtain Russian citizenship after approval.
