Putin gives a New Year’s speech – after 25 years in power
Russian President Vladimir Putin highlights in his New Year’s speech that the country should be “proud” of what has been done during his quarter of a century in power.
The speech is being held exactly 25 years since Vladimir Putin took over from his successor Boris Yeltsin. He was named acting president in 1999 when Yeltsin unexpectedly resigned and apologized for the country’s post-Soviet turmoil.
During the New Year’s address, Putin did not explicitly mention the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. He did, however, praise the country’s soldiers, a recurring theme since the invasion.

After the suspected cable sabotage in the Baltic Sea, Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson (M) says TV4 that he is worried.
– On good grounds, he says in TV4’s Nyhetsmorgon.
– Coincidence exists, but I usually don’t believe in coincidence. When sufficiently strange things happen, it is usually not a coincidence, he says.
More needs to be done to protect the Baltic Sea, he believes.

Man dead after emergency landing
A man has died after an emergency landing last week, reports say Daily Mail.
The man was one of the crew on board the plane.
On December 23, the aircraft was on its way from Bucharest to Zurich, but had to make an emergency landing in the city of Graz instead. The reason was a technical fault in one of the engines, which led to the cabin being filled with smoke, according to early reports.
Crew and passengers were quickly evacuated from the aircraft and 12 injured people were treated urgently on site.
A man from the crew was taken to hospital, but has now died a week later.
“We have to announce, with the deepest sadness and regret, that our young colleague died in the hospital in Graz on Monday,” writes the airline company Swiss International Air in a press release.

Jolie and Pitt agreed after the divorce
Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have reportedly reached a divorce settlement after eight years of disagreements.
“Frankly, Angelina is exhausted, but she is relieved that this part is over,” Jolie’s lawyer James Simon said in a statement to the AP.
Jolie filed for divorce in September 2016. By then, the former co-stars had been married for two years.
“She and the children vacated all the properties they had shared with Pitt, and since then she has focused on finding peace and healing for her family. This is just part of a long ongoing process that started eight years ago,” continues the lawyer.
The former star couple has six children together. A judge declared them divorced in 2019, but property division and custody of the children have had to be resolved separately. Details of the divorce have been kept secret as the couple hired a private judge.
No court documents regarding the agreement have been filed yet. Brad Pitt’s lawyer has also not commented on the statement.
