Ukraine has demanded that Mexico arrest Russian President Vladimir Putin if he attends the inauguration of the country’s new President Claudia Sheinbaum. Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador rejected Ukraine’s request, saying: “We cannot do that. It is not up to us.”

HE WAS INVITED TO THE OATH CEREMONY
Sheinbaum’s team sent a “diplomatic notification” to all countries with which Mexico maintains diplomatic relations, including Putin, earlier this week inviting them to attend the inauguration.
CALL FROM UKRAINE
The statement made by the Ukrainian Embassy in Mexico reminded that there is an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for Putin. The statement used the expressions, “We hope that the Mexican government is aware that Vladimir Putin is a war criminal with an arrest warrant against him” and conveyed that the Mexican government is sure to comply with it.
HE WAS DECLARED A WAR CRIMINAL
Last year, the ICC issued an arrest warrant for Putin and charged him with war crimes for illegally smuggling hundreds of children from Ukraine to Russia. Russia is not a member of the ICC, but Mexico is.
In June, Putin congratulated Obrador ally Sheinbaum on his election victory and described Mexico as “Russia’s historic friendly partner in Latin America.”
