Former German Chancellor Angela Mergel made confessions about the Russia-Ukraine war in her interview published in Der Spiegel magazine. Merkel said in her interview that she had attempted a dialogue with Russia on Ukraine at that time, but was left alone by the European Union (EU) countries. “I met with Presidents Biden and Putin. Together with Macron, I wanted an independent European discussion format with Putin in the EU Council to be established. Some people objected to this. I was no longer able to defend myself. Because everyone knew that my term would end in the fall.”
‘YOU ARE POLITICALLY DONE’
Speaking about her meeting with Putin in Moscow in August last year, Merkel said, “The same happened during my farewell visit to Moscow. Putin gave the message that ‘you are done politically’ here. For Putin, only power is important. He brought it with him, normally our meetings would be one-on-one,” he said.
