If you have a dishwasher, you’ve probably seen little brown spots of rust that settle on your cutlery and knives, making them look dirty and not very inviting. The culprit of this is called fly rust and it is not desirable.
But what is plane rust? These are small iron particles that can appear after you have washed kitchen utensils that consist of or are made of iron. When the dishwasher is running, the fly rust circulates in the machine and the rust spots appear on your other kitchen utensils, Aftonbladet Livsstil writes.

Tools that leave behind flying rust
To reduce the risk of fly rust occurring in the machine, it can be good to know which tools cause this and henceforth wash these by hand.
But rust can also occur from the plastic baskets in which the cutlery is placed. This is because the plastic coating can peel off after being repeatedly damaged by sharp kitchen knives. Then the metal is exposed and fly rust forms.

This is how you get rid of fly rust in the machine
To remove the fly rust in the machine, you can easily use something that everyone has at home – aluminum foil. Form a lightly pressed ball from the aluminum foil and place it in the cutlery basket. Then run the dishwasher just as usual with dishes in it.
What the aluminum ball does is to catch the fly rust so it doesn’t stick to your cutlery. This can be easily repeated if necessary.

Prevents the rust spots
If the damage has already been done, i.e. if your cutlery has already got rust spots, you can polish them with a regular cleaner for stainless steel. Then use the housewife trick with the aluminum foil and you will see that the stains do not come back, writes Aftonbladet Lifestyle.
