Police in Irvine, California, announced Friday that they administered the antidote Naloxone to an eight-week-old puppy that ingested fentanyl in a car in a parking lot.

The dog’s owners, a woman and a man in their 30s, were arrested on suspicion of animal cruelty and drug possession, and police took the puppy with them when the two were driven to the police station, The Guardian reports.

– On the way to the station, one of the suspects said: “I think my dog has overdosed”. She recognized the symptoms because the dog had overdosed once before, police spokesman Kyle Oldoerp told the Los Angeles Times.

According to a statement from the Irvine police, the officers then immediately gave a dose of the antidote to the puppy, which quickly began to recover.

A video posted by the police on their Facebook page shows the police giving the puppy, which is breathing violently, the antidote and how it then perks up and is petted.

The dog was then taken to the vet for further treatment.

“We are pleased to report that the dog has made a full recovery and that our animal services unit will be caring for her,” police said.
