Public urged to prepare for possible ice storm

The City of Brantford is warning residents to prepare themselves for an approaching winter storm.

Environment Canada has issued a winter storm watch for Brantford and area with an ice storm possible late Wednesday into Thursday, which could result in extended and widespread utility outages.

In a public notice issued on Tuesday afternoon, city staff urged residents to make sure household emergency kits are up to date and include drinking water, flashlights and batteries, food, medicine, a first-aid kit and blankets.

Residents can follow alerts for the area on the Environment Canada website.

To report a power outage in Brantford, call GrandBridge Energy at 519-751-3522. People should always stay back at least 10 meters from downed power lines, said the public notice.

Tips to keep safe during a power outage include:

  • Unplug all appliances, including space heaters, toaster ovens, griddles, that may have been left on at the time of the outage and could ignite when the power returns.
  • Unplug computers, televisions, stereos and other electronics to prevent damage caused by power surges. Use surge protecting power bars where possible.
  • Turn off stove cook top and oven.
  • Turn off the water to the clothes washer and dishwasher if they were in use when the power went out.
  • Leave a light or radio on so you’ll know when the power is restored.
  • Never use barbecues, propane or kerosene heaters, or portable generators indoors.
  • Never leave candles unattended.
