Psychologist disassembled Gilmore Girls and shows that Rorys and Lorelais

Gilmore Girls is one of the most popular series of the 2000s. In the 153 episodes of the 7 seasons (currently at Netflix, but also at Disney+ and RTL+), the tragicomedy of Amy Sherman-Palladino follows the fate of the mother-daughter duo Lorelai and Rory in the fictional US small Hollow. But although many fans loved the intimate relationship between the main characters, a psychologist later showed that the depicted relationship in truth a serious personality disorder is.

Psychological billing with Gilmore Girls: An unhealthy relationship of dependencies on Netflix

The special feature of the mother-daughter relationship between Lorelai (Lauren Graham) and Rory (Alexis Bledel) is already in the series title: They are the Gilmore Girls. Both are still very young as “girls” because the 30-year-old Lorelai Rory received in teenage age. Psychologist Dr. Nicole Lepera also the roots of the problematic co-dependency:

Lorelai and Rory are the classic mother and daughter. Rory becomes pushed into the adult role through their emotionally immature parent. Lorelai uses her as her only confidante (BFF) and there is no limits -It is over-involidated in every aspect of Rory’s life.

In sociology and psychology, the concept of co-dependency indicates (self-) destructive behavior in an unbalanced relationship that borders on an addiction. That can be pathological, but it doesn’t have to be. Dr. refers to symptoms of such a (too) close relationship in Gilmore Girls Lepera too:

That shows up as Control, manipulation and hold back [von Informationen]. Lorelai projects on Rory from childhood onto her own dream of going to Havard. When Rory applies in Yale, she pouts and leaves dinner. Rory hides things about Lorelai because she is afraid of how her mother could react.

From this point of view, the mother-daughter relationship drawn in the Gilmore Girls series as charming and bizarre suddenly accepts dark features:

They never communicate openly and are silent during conflicts. Your dramatic relationship is an addictive series, but [Gilmore Girls] leaves the real pain and shame of such a dysfunctional co-dependent relationship outside.

In a follow-up tweet, Dr. Nicole Lepera still clear that she enjoyed Gilmore Girls as a series. Because the (realistic) illustration of a dysfunctional relationship does not necessarily make Gilmore Girls a bad series.
