In 1987, director Alan Parker brought the psychological thriller Angel Heart to the big screen. Despite big names like Robert De Niro and Mickey Rourke, the film flopped at the box office. Angel Heart takes you back to America in the 1950s and tells the story of private detective Harry Angel (Mickey Rourke), who mysterious businessman Louis Cypher (Robert De Niro) met. Cypher hires Angel to track down a missing singer named Johnny Favorite. But that’s not all.
The more Angel deals with the mysterious case, the deeper he penetrates into a labyrinth of lies, secrets and cruelty. A ruthless killer is on the loose, while Angel drowns his sorrows in booze and has multiple blackouts. Increasingly he threatens the losing touch with reality.
Angel Heart is an extremely dark film. The most disturbing scene seems harmless at first: De Niro peels an egg and eats it. The way he separates the shell from the egg and then the egg stuffed into itself, but kills any appetite. After that, you’ll never look at eggs the same way again.

However, another moment caused controversy. Because of a sex scene Starring Mickey Rourke and co-star Lisa Bonet, Angel Heart received an X-rating from the MPAA (Motion Pictures Association of America), which was awarded to films with intense sexual and/or violent content up until the early 1990s.
The studio didn’t like that at all. Last but not least, an X rating was primarily associated with pornographic films at the time. For the one level lower R rating ten seconds cut become. Although Parker initially resisted, he was ultimately overruled by the studio officials and Angel Heart was released in the cinemas with the version cut by ten seconds and an R rating.
