A developer explains in an interview that gaming PCs and PS5 Pro cannot be compared with each other. This is not only due to the price, but also to the possible performance that both devices promise the customer.
In a published interview on WCCFTech with developer Tower Five, game director Renaud Charpentier shared his impressions about Sony’s upcoming console, the PS5 Pro. The development studio is known, among other things, for the strategy game Empire of the Ants.
In the conversation, he explained that the PS5 Pro and a gaming PC can’t really be compared. But that doesn’t stop many gamers from directly comparing the prices of gaming PCs and PS5s.
A PC costs 3 to 5 times as much, but games don’t look much better than on the PS5 Pro
When asked in the interview how the PS5 Pro compares to a gaming PC at maximum resolution, he replied (via wccftech.com):
As said and presented by Sony, most games are expected to double their frame rate on the Pro version or improve the quality of the scenes if they already run at 60 on the PS5. Still, maximum performance PCs are “limitless,” so to speak, so of course they will be more powerful, but you can’t compare them.
A fully equipped PC easily costs 3 to 5 times more and uses 3 to 5 times more electrical energy. But what’s interesting, and says a lot about the flattening silicon development curve, is that your game won’t look or play three to five times better on your monster PC than on a PS5 Pro console. The return on investment from high-end silicon is plummeting, and that could impact the lifespan of console hardware.
Gaming PCs are unsurprisingly more powerful than a PS5 because, unlike a console, there is no upper limit on performance. But a monster PC doesn’t necessarily make the game prettier than the PS5 Pro ultimately manages to do.
He also draws another comparison with the PS4 Pro. He himself explains that the frame rate (FPS) will be doubled from the PS5 to the PS5 Pro and that is similar to the PS4 Pro. But it is still too early to compare the performance of the PS5 Pro with games on the PS5.
According to Charpentier, at least because of the way games are developed these days compared to the previous generation, PS5 games can make better use of the PS5 Pro hardware than PS4 Pro and PS4.
At first glance, the PS5 and PS5 Pro look very similar because Sony has hardly changed the design at all. But what are the similarities and, above all, the differences between PS5 and PS5 Pro?
