You can now participate in voice chats on Discord with the PS5. MeinMMO editor Maik Schneider has tested it extensively, explains how it works and gives you an assessment of how good the new feature is.
Since the beginning of February, the PlayStation 5 has allowed joint voice chats with Discord – first as a beta, now for all players. This finally allows you to create uncomplicated chats with PC players if you want to chat or gamble something via crossplay.

PS5 & Discord – Set up voice chat
How does Discord work on PS5? To do this, you must first connect your PSN account to your Discord account. Either on the console:

If you linked accounts prior to the introduction of Discord chats on PS5, you may need to relink them. Follow the relevant instructions. The settings guide you through the setup.
After that you can drag any voice chat on Discord over to the PS5 – whether it’s direct, group or server chat. However, this only works on PS5: PS4 does not support voice chats.
Tap on the chat in Discord so you can see all participants and then you can “Broadcast to Console” the chat from here.
On PC, you’ll see a black and white icon in the bottom left that looks like a controller in front of a tablet. On mobile you have to swipe up from the bottom to see the chat options.
After that, you still have to select the correct console to transfer and wait a few seconds. A small chat window will open on PS5 and now you can use your console headset to chat on Discord.

Usual PS quality with small dropouts
What is the quality of the voice chats? The general voice quality is comparable to the usual standards of PlayStation chat. Nothing special, but mostly stable and fellow players are easy to understand.
What is positively noticeable: the connection is established much faster. At a party on PlayStation Network, it can sometimes take minutes before everyone can finally hear each other. That wasn’t the case with Discord.
But I had some disconnections and had to drag the chat from the Discord app back to the PS5. So far, however, this has only been a minor problem and has rarely happened.
Conclusion: minimal solution – there is still something to do
First of all: The fact that the PS5 finally offers options for chatting with people on PC is a small revolution. I bought a headset with multi-channel Bluetooth so that I can connect PC and PS5 at the same time.
I used to have in-ear headphones under my real headset to use Discord chat.
When I was finally able to test the feature, the disillusionment came even before the first chat: no Discord app on PS5. You have to launch Discord from either PC or mobile, go into chat, and then swipe over to PlayStation.
This doesn’t start a party on the PS5 that I could invite other console friends to. Everything is done through Discord and you only broadcast the audio in and out of the voice chat.
A minimal solution. But still better than having a button in your ear under the headset.
